The Alley Theatre presents the world premiere play with music Lover, Beloved: An Evening with Carson McCullers. February 9 – March 11, 2018.
Written and performed by Suzanne Vega, with songs by Vega and Duncan Sheik.
Lover, Beloved pays homage to renowned Southern writer Carson McCullers (The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and The Member of the Wedding) in this new play with music about the outspoken, perceptive, and wild dreamer who became one of the brightest literary lights of the 20th century.
The songs, co-authored by Duncan Sheik (Tony Award® for Spring Awakening), richly capture McCullers’ instinctively rebellious nature and forward-thinking philosophies on race, gender, and love.
Suzanne Vega appears as Carson McCullers. Jackson Gay (Grounded, Other Desert Cities) returns to the Alley to direct; she previously directed the workshop held at the Alley in 2016. Lover, Beloved also had a special preview at last year’s Alley All New Festival.
The creative team includes Music Direction and Arrangements by Jason Hart, Scenic Designer Takeshi Kata, Costume Designer Jessica Ford, Lighting Designer Paul Whitaker, and Sound Design by Broken Chord.
Tickets are available now at alleytheatre.org or by calling the Box Office at 713-220-5700.
Recommended for mature audiences.
