East End Cultural District Open House - Fall in Love with the East End - To Take Place February 13

On February 13, 2016 from 1:00 to 5:00, just in time for Valentine’s Day, visit East End artist studios, galleries, and theaters on a self-guided tour of some of Houston’s most interesting creative spaces.
The second East End Houston Cultural District open house will give visitors a glimpse into some of the incredibly unique cultural assets that make Houston’s East End what it is today.

The theme “Fall in love with the East End” sponsored by the East End Foundation will spearhead an open house of art studios, galleries, theaters, and creative fabrication “makerspaces.”

The self-guided tour is intended to indulge art and cultural aficionados giving them a direct experience with art making.

Fall in Love with the East End kicks off at Houston Makerspace (3605 Texas St.) at 1pm.

Highlights of the open house include:

Houston Makerspace [event headquarters] – 3605 Texas
Houston Makerspace is the official event headquarters. Stop here first to pick up a map and list of all the day’s activities. Local makers will be on hand for the Houston Makerspace Maker Market where you can shop for one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items made right here in H-town. FMW fablab will be offering free blacksmithing demonstrations, Lone Star Samwiches will be on-site to feed the masses, Jean-Paul of Reverberation Houston will be spinning old-school vinyl all day, and 8th Wonder Brewery will be serving up free beer.

Houston Media Source – 410 Roberts St.
Do you have a great idea for a TV or radio show? Then be sure to attend the open house at Houston MediaSource, home to Houston’s public access TV and radio stations. You can tour the studios and editing facilities, sit in the producer’s chair in the HMS Net Radio studio, and get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of productions on HMS-TV.  Learn how you can produce and air your own programs on Houston MediaSource. BOX13 ArtSpace – 6700 Harrisburg Blvd.
Visit the studios of some of the most interesting artists working in Houston today, and leave with a work of art made by you! BOX 13 will offer visitors an opportunity to make a sunprint in a hands-on art making activity suitable for all ages. Housed in a former sewing machine showroom, BOX 13 is an artist run, non-profit, innovative environment for the creation and advancement of experimental contemporary art.

Frenetic Theater – 5102 Harrisburg Blvd.
The FrenetiCore Dance company will be performing an innovative and fun love-themed 15 minute dance set at both 1:30pm and 2:30pm. Stay tuned for updates on live music and food onsite!

Art Square Studios I – 2315 Commerce St.
ArtSquare Studios will host open studios, demos, and hands-on opportunities to create unique arts and crafts.

Visit Domestic Papers & Missy Bosch Studio in Studio #9 during the Open House to create a Vintage Valentine using library book cards and pockets and our antique typewriter! You’ll Fall in Love with our beautiful handmade books and literary artwork.

Catacomb and Milk & Honey Vintage in Studio #7– check out the books, ‘zines, stickers, and artwork by local Houston artists and browse the romantic collection of vintage clothing.

FYHA in Studio #4– come share FYHA’s Houston Love by picking a fresh hometown t-shirt for your valentine.

Jaided325, LLC in Studio #12 – browse Jai’s collection of ‘vintage meets chic’ clothing.

Commerce Street Pilates in Studio #13 – come by demos of the Pilates Reformer. Deborah has three machines so bring a friend!

Post-Studio Projects in Studios #28 & 29– hosting laser-cutting demos all day, a min lasered heart make-and-take, and cut-paper valentines for purchase.

Elisabeth Smith in Studio #14 – see Elisabeth’s newest paintings both inside her studio and gracing the hallways of 2315 Commerce.

4 Ever Moore Photography in Studio #15 – Activity to be announced.

PrintMatters in Studio #20– PrintMatters is an organization of some of the top artists in Houston.  They have been the leading force for Print Houston, and RocknRollin Steam Roller event held annually at Saint Arnold Brewery each spring.  They will be on hand with etchings, monoprints and other forms of prints for sale.  This is an opportunity to buy a unique piece of art for that special valentine, and to meet with some of the printmatters members.

More painters, weavers, and photographers are expected to join the fun by opening their studio spaces to visitors that day.

ArtSquare Studios II – 2327 Commerce
The Handweavers’ Guild House in Studio #106 will have on-going demonstrations; warm cider if the weather is cold; a make-it, take-it project and more!

Capitol Street Gallery – 6701 Capitol St.
Capital Street Gallery is both an exhibition venue and a fabrication studio. See artist Bobby Bacon in action and view works-in-progress and finely crafted finished works made of hardwood and steel in this industrial urban space.

Wonky Power Records – 3534 Navigation Boulevard
Wonky Power is a working recording studio and music record label. The day’s activities will include live music from Handsomebeast, Rex Hudson, and George West on Wonky Power’s indoor stage, studio tour, an artist showcase, video projections, and complimentary drinks from sponsors Deep Eddy Vodka, Topo Chico Mineral Water, and Buffalo Bayou Brewing.

Finca Tres Robles – 257 North Greenwood Street
Tour the East End’ premiere urban farm, support local farming, and take home some fresh, locally grown produce.

Kismet Boutique – 708 Telephone Road
Kismet is a local boutique featuring unique clothing and accessories. Kismet will host a pop-up exhibition by Dormalou Project during the open house. Dormalou is a mobile art gallery with an emphasis on growing future artists and creating community based art projects.

Bohemeo’s – 708 Telephone Road
UH graphic design program will be hosting a print sale and visitors can grab lunch and wash it down with a cold beer while enjoying live local music.

Tres – 726 Telephone Road
Shop for unique folk art and handcrafted items and enjoy live acoustical music, wine and margaritas.

ArtSpace – Healing and Creative Arts Studio – 704 Telephone Road
Come and explore all the offerings of ArtSpace – work at your own pace, with the materials you choose! Artists will be there to guide, demo and support you as you discover your creative self!

East End Studio Gallery – 708C Telephone Road
Stop by East End Studio Gallery for Amor, a Valentine’s themed market open from noon until 5PM. Vendors, art, music, beverages and goodies.

Luz de Luna Studios – 708A Telephone Road
Take advantage of the opportunity to sit for a Valentine’s photo session shot by East End photographer Adanary Jacques at her working photo studio.

Greenwood Bay Woodworking Studio – 20 N. Sampson
Greenwood Bay is a working studio that handcrafts custom furniture and contemporary sculptures for residential and commercial clients. Take a tour of the shop, see artist Bob Card at work, and browse a collection of contemporary art available for purchase.

East End Bike Tour led by BikeHouston
Departs from Houston Makerspace, 3605 Texas, at 2PM

Come out to the East End and enjoy a fun day filled with bikes and art! BikeHouston will be leading a bike tour starting at Makerspace at 2 pm. We will visit each of the East End Foundation Open House locations and see some great artwork all while riding bikes. Advance registration required. EastEndBikeRide: 2nd Annual LOVE Ride
Departs from Houston Makerspace, 3605 Texas, at 12:30 and ends at Wonky Power Records

Join us for a Valentine’s Ride around town as we visit several “LOVE” murals. What better way to show you love someone then by taking them out on a bike ride to check out some awesome art? Invite your girlfriend, boyfriend, lover, or come alone because who knows…you might meet that special someone. This will be a social pace ride with about 20 miles & 5 stops. We will have FREE beer by Saint Arnold Brewing Company. Boombox Taco, Fat Wagon & Belly Up will be selling delicious food at the ending spot. #eebrloveride
